Cleveland’s Own: Children’s Hunger Alliance

In this month’s edition of Fox 8’s Cleveland’s Own, Matt Kaulig meets with Judy Mobley from Children’s Hunger Alliance.

Children’s Hunger Alliance is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in Ohio by providing millions of healthy meals to fuel kids’ minds and bodies. The work at Children’s Hunger Alliance provides kids with one of their most basic needs, food. Now over 700,000 – or 1 in 4 – children in Ohio are struggling with hunger. Children’s Hunger Alliance has a team of 50 professionals throughout Ohio who are passionate about ending childhood hunger in our 88 counties. Their home office is in Columbus, Ohio, with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo regional offices and other staff working remotely across the state. They partner with organizations throughout Ohio to provide nutritious meals to at-risk children who need food most, helping in-home daycare providers, daycare centers, afterschool, and summer programs provide balanced, healthy meals to children in their care.

Matt Kaulig

Hi, I'm Matt Kaulig! This month on Cleveland's Own, we hear from Children's Hunger Alliance. This incredible organization is dedicated to ending childhood hunger in Ohio by providing millions of healthy meals to fuel kids' minds and bodies. They ensure children without access receive healthy food, nutrition, education, and physical activity. Let's hear from Judy with Children's Hunger Alliance.

Judy Mobley

Children's Hunger Alliance is a nonprofit organization that works across the state of Ohio. And simply put, our mission is to make sure that children that don't have enough food to live a healthy life have access to nutritious meals. Our tagline this year has become "working together" to feed Ohio's children. The programs that we focus on at Children's Hunger Alliance are daycare centers, in-home childcare providers, after-school programs, childcare centers, weekend feeding, and meals for holidays.

Matt Kaulig

So, Judy, thanks for coming! Tell us about Children's Hunger Alliance and what we're doing here today.

Judy Mobley

So today we're working on meals for Thanksgiving. This northeast part of Ohio is the highest poverty area for kids. Our focus is on how do we make sure these kids that may not have a caring adult in their life, how do we make sure that they get food? So that's really our focus is just 100% on children.

Matt Kaulig

So how many meals were provided in 2020?

Judy Mobley

We're so proud to say over 9.4 million meals that CHA and our partners because we couldn't do this important work without the partners that we work with.

Matt Kaulig

Holy cow, 9.4 million!

Judy Mobley

For every child that's in an after-school program, there are five more that would go if they had one available to them. So really, that's just telling us the need is great. And you can never have enough summer programs or after-school programs to make sure that all those 700,000 plus kids have enough food to eat. If we don't provide our children in our state of Ohio, one of their most basic needs, which is food, how do we expect them to do well in school to become a productive adult? And finally, maybe rise above poverty and break that cycle in the family that they've been born into. So those kids don't have food in the summer if we don't find a summer site for them. So we had about 300 summer sites this year, and we did something for the second year, which was mobile feeding. So you see our van here, thankfully, to some funders who helped provide that, and then we leased other vehicles. But we had seven or eight different vans making four or five different stops at different locations across the state.

Matt Kaulig

So, Judy, how can Fox 8 viewers help?

Judy Mobley

Well, one of the biggest things they can do to help is obviously financial. We need funding to be able to pay for all these meals. But the one thing that I am excited about right now that's new is adopt-a-school. The company that's adopting this particular school, they're going to help us pass out the meals. They're going to help us pack the meals. So all kinds of things that just let that school, those students know there's somebody else that cares about them and is wanting to help them. So many organizations really do have a heart for helping. And there's no better way to connect than to really be the one on the front lines helping give those meals to the kids.
